Scout Report: Richairo Živković

In a new feature for the blog, I have teamed up with Dutch football expert Luuk Manse(@Officialluuk) who will be compiling a number of scout reports on the biggest and best talent from the Eredivisie.

This month, it's FC Groningen's
Richairo Živković

Full Name: Richairo Juliano Živković
DOB: 05/09/1996 (17)
Place of Birth: Assen, Netherlands
Height: 6ft, 1 inch
Position: Striker
Current club: FC Groningen
Squad number: 30
Preferred foot: Right

Key Atrributes
With a surname like Živković, one would expect FC Groningen's youngest ever debutant to have a bit of zip about him.

The 17 year-old striker, who drools for a dribble and salivates for a sprint, began playing his football at FVV Foxhol where he established himself as a genuine Dutch prodigy. At the age of just 11, the nippy forward made the short move from the village of Foxhol to Groningen where he signed a three year deal with the Eredivisie club.

On December 2nd 2012Živković made his debut for the green and whites against Heracles Almelo. All eyes may have been fixated on the clubs youngest ever player, but his expeditious movement and mesmerising mobility made the Groningen faithful's task a tricky one. The striker's first Eredivise goal came on the opening day of the 2013/2014 season when his 89th minute header sealed a 4-1 win for Groningen over NEC Nijmegen. Securing his title as the club's youngest ever goalscorer at just 16 years and 332 days old, Živković announced himself to the Dutch football world.

With both Serbian and Dutch blood running through his veins, the young attacker attracted interest from both sides of Europe with his characteristically animated performances. In August 2013, a request from the Serbia U19's team to include Živković in a preliminary friendly squad was rejected by Groningen on the basis that the game was not included in the international playing calendar. A subsequent call from the Netherland's U19 squad in the same month was accepted, but the striker didn't make it through pre-selection.

The teenager is beginning to attract the big guns and comparisons between himself and Arjen Robben have already, inevitably, begun. However, although Živković's preposterous pace, cool control and magical movement can be likened to the Bayern Munich winger, his ability in the air separates him apart from the Dutch legend. His first goal for the club came via an acrobatic diving header and his height makes him a terrific target for wingers bombing down the flanks.

With a little muscle, Richairo Živković's goalscoring tally could soar, but his slight frame renders him a fragile foe for any defender. With just 5 goals in 21 Eredivise appearances, the Dutch starlet lacks a genuine goalscoring threat and has now gone four games without a goal. Fortunately, age remains on the strikers' side and improvements can be made.

The nippy forward has earned praise from both FVV Foxhol's and FC Groningen's youth coaches who label Živković as 'focused' and 'a great talent'. However, Dutch eyes are not the only peepers gazing in the direction of the Eredivisie's freshest talent. In November 2013, FC Groningen received 13 applications from scouts representing top European clubs such as Barcelona and Real Madrid to watch Richairo in action. Although the scouts never confirmed who they were there watch, Groningen director Hans Nijland said 'it is obvious they have come to see Richairo'.

With Manchester City, Liverpool, Barcelona and Real Madrid leading the chase for the speedy striker, big things lie in store for Richairo Živković.

Živković's main strengths include:
  • Movement
  • Positioning
  • Dribbling
  • Pace
  • Heading

Živković's main weaknesses include:

  • Strength
  • Finishing

Facts
  • Živković has made 24 appearances in FC Groningen's first team squad
  • He has scored 5 goals in 21 appearances for the club
  • However, out of the 24 matches he has featured in, he has only started 5 times
  • Živković's personal Twitter account is @RichairoJZ
  • His former club is FVV Foxhol

Overall Rating
  • 1-3 - Not good enough to reach the top level
  • 4-5 - Potential to nail down a regular spot in a mid table side
  • 6-7 - Potential to be a top European striker
  • 8-10 - Potential to be world class

Manchester City 1 - 0 Crystal Palace

MANCHESTER CITY 1 - 0 CRYSTAL PALACE
Džeko 66'

Džeko goal decorates dreary City win.

Edin Džeko's 66th minute goal sealed a stale victory for Manchester City on Saturday afternoon as the blues toiled and tussled to overcome a compact Crystal Palace side and soar to the top of the Barclays Premier League table.

A guarantee of goals was proposed ahead of the clash which saw the league's top scorers surpass their record of 53 goals in 19 games achieved in their 2011/2012 title winning season, however, Pulis's Palace did their best to plug a usually rampant City side.

The hosts controlled the early possession without really flicking their creative switch as the visitors sat comfortably in their bus that occupied their 18 yard box. David Silva and Fernandinho combined elegantly throughout, but they could only propel the blues into a wall of red and blue. The speed of Congolese midfielder Yannick Bolasie offered the Eagles a rare flight path against a vulnerable Dedryck Boyata, but the African's attempts on goal did nothing to test the brilliant Hart.

(Dedryck Boyata made his first Premier League start of the season at right-back against Crystal Palace)

Adopting a solid 4-5-1 formation with Edin Džeko occupying the lone role up top, Manchester City struggled to test the hands of Argentinian stopper Julián Speroni and add to their formidable 37 goals at home this season. The blues were missing the width customarily provided by Aleksandar Kolarov and Pablo Zabaleta and Jesús Navas's tendency to cut inside gave City no real outlet on the flanks. Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho threatened to supply the blues with a late first half lead, but the South American's exquisite volley flew just over the bar.

With a frustrating first 45 minutes complete and a Rocky Balboa style black-eye imprinted onto the face of Joe Hart, Manuel Pellegrini illuminated the lack of entertainment by sending Álvaro Negredo and Samir Nasri on early warm-ups. After witnessing the visitors enjoy a brief spell of dominance in the first ten minutes of the second half, both were thrown into the fray in a desperate pursuit of a goal.

Just moments after speculative efforts from Jason Puncheon and Mile Jedinak were adroitly saved by Joe Hart, the blue got their goal. Jesús Navas composedly squared to Edin Džeko in the 18 yard box on 66 minutes and the Bosnian duly tucked the ball past Speroni. The vital opener marked the striker's 50th goal for the club and ensured that City had scored in 60 straight home matches.

(Edin Džeko celebrates his opener and 50th goal for Manchester City)

With the impetus firmly in the stride of the home side, Manuel's minions marched to an outstanding 81% of possession in the second half, however, a lack of penetration left the unlikely probability of a Palace equaliser still open. Knowing that his side's performance would be one to forget rather than celebrate, Manuel Pellegrini introduced Aleksandar Kolarov on the 74 minute mark in an attempt to see out the win.

A period of City prepotency helped to wind down proceedings as the blues waved a languid goodbye to 2013. It would be irrational to complain with just the one goal, but fortunately for City faithful, goals are what we have come to expect from our side at home this season.

It may have been dingy, dull and even depressing at times; but at the end of the day, WE'RE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!

Player Ratings
HartJoe Hart - Braved his way through a nasty eye injury and made a number of excellent stops from Puncheon and Jedinak. England's No.1 is back!

BoyataDedryck Boyata 7 - Always tough playing out of position, but the young Belgian had a steady game in an unfamiliar position. Struggled a little with the pace of Bolasie early on but ensured the Congelese international faded out of the game in the second half.

KompanyVincent Kompany 7 - Solid yet again from the skipper who ensured Palace's counter attacks resulted in nothing.

NastasicMatija Nastasić 7 - The Serbian's return to first team football saw him struggle with the pace early on, but as he acclimatized, he fit in soundly alongside Kompany.

ClichyGaël Clichy 6.5 - A quiet game for the Frenchman who wasn't able to provide any attacking threat down the left. However, defensively, he did little wrong.

SilvaDavid Silva- Controlled City's play in the first half but faded in the second. His late booking will see him miss City's trip to Swansea on New Year's Day.

FernandinhoFernandinho 7.5 - City's major attacking threat in the first half and was unlucky not to net a double with a spectacular volley and a powerful header. Passing was excellent and a number of sublime balls were controlled poorly by Džeko.

GarciaJavi García 6.5 - The Spaniard was a little hesitant in his passing but sat quietly and comfortably behind Fernandinho and Silva.

MilnerJames Milner - Forever attempting to make something happen and his industry was key in Saturday's tough battle. Switched to right back later in the game which showcased his versatility.

NavasJesús Navas 7 - Drifts in far too often and made City adopt a narrow approach in the first half. Hugged the touchline in the second and assisted Džeko's goal with great composure.

DzekoEdin Džeko 6 - Did little but score, as if often the case with the Bosnian.

Substitutes
Samir Nasri 6 - Helped City to a wealth of possession.

Álvaro Negredo 6 - Pressurised Palace's defence with more urgency than his strike partner.

Aleksandar Kolarov 6  - Attacked with more purpose than Clichy.

Pellegrini plans a poisonous punishment for Pulis.
Gareth Barry Gareth Barry of Manchester City is challenged by Victor Moses of Crystal Palace during the Carling Cup second round match between Crystal Palace and Manchester City at Selhurst Park on August 27, 2009 in London, England.

Languid legs and stuffed stomachs will characterise the Premier League roster sapped by  a saturated Christmas period, however, for Manuel Pellegrini's championship chasers, an excellent Etihad record must be maintained.

The blues welcomed incontestably their toughest opponents yet to the Etihad on Thursday where City scrapped and sparred with a Suárez led Liverpool side to record a precious 2-1 victory. Brendan Rodger's proceeded to blame the officials for his side's agonizing Boxing Day blunder, but in truth, the reds weren't clinical enough in front of goal.

Pellegrini praised his side's fiesty showing against the 'best team' in the league, but City's Chilean chancellor may be forgiven for tinkering with a side that have endured eight games in 26 days this December as he prepares to ring the changes on Saturday afternoon.

Matija Nastasić is in line for a return to first team football after being named on the bench two days ago and the Serbian will be desperate to resurrect his first team place after three weeks out. Striker Edin Džeko, linked with Valencia this week, will also be hoping for a start.

(Matija Nastasić could make a return to the first team after three weeks out with a calf injury)

With only two wins from 11 Premier League games, Ian Holloway's Eagle's were failing to take flight in the top flight of English football. The appointment of ex-Stoke boss Tony Pulis in late November instilled a solidity into Palace's play and the Welshman has enjoyed three wins in six games with his new club. A delightful 90th minute finish from Dwight Gayle secured a vital win against Aston Villa on Boxing Day as Pulis's men climbed back up the chimney and out of a repugnant relegation zone.

Plethoric predictions of four and five nil have already been stamped on the tie and pundits clearly expect the league's top scorers to shatter Palace. The blues have netted a terrifying 37 goals in nine home fixtures this season and will be intent on perforating Palace's already putrid goal difference of -15.

A win would see Manchester City take a temporary place at the top of the Premier League before Arsenal's titanic tussle with Chelsea on Sunday, but the blues will feel that their phenomenal form in front of goal warrants that spot. Changes may be made, but prices will be paid if Manuel's minions fall to a side that have won only twice away from home this season.

4-0

Line-Ups
Manuel Pellegrini is expected to tinker with his tiring title chasers and Matija Nastasić could line up alongside either Vincent Kompany or Joleon Lescott in the centre of defence. Martin Demichelis will remain on the sidelines after picking up a late injury ahead of City's Boxing Day victory over Liverpool and his return date is currently unknown.

Micah Richards and Stevan Jovetić remain out of action with long standing injuries, but the likes of Jack Rodwell, James Milner and Edin Džeko could make first team appearances.

(James Milner could make a well deserved start on Saturday)

Pulis is expected to field the side that beat Aston Villa just two days ago and will be without Jerome Thomas and Adlène Guedioura.

Possible line-ups
Manchester City: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Nastasić, Clichy, Milner, Rodwell, Fernandinho, Nasri, Džeko, Negredo

Crystal Palace: Speroni, Mariappa, Gabbidon, Delaney, Parr, Ward, Jedinak, Bolasie, Bannan, Puncheon, Chamakh

Key Players
James Milner
The Englishman has been in fine form the blues this December, with his performances against Bayern Munich and Leicester City impressing the City faithful. Not only does Milner offer tirelessness and an unmatchable appetite to fight for his team; he also brings pace down the flanks. He may not score many, but his ability to finish is undeniable and if he starts on Saturday, he'll be the driving force in the City team.

Marouane Chamakh
The Moroccan has hit form recently with three goals in his last four games. The African brings height and power to Palace's forward line and will have to be marked carefully if his aerial abilities are to be controlled.

Head to Head Stats
  • Crystal Palace have not beaten Manchester City in the league since September 1996 when they won 3-1
  • Only two Premier League fixtures have been played between the sides, City winning them both
  • The last meeting between the teams was in August 2009 when Carlos Tevez led City to a 2-0 league cup win at Selhurst Park
  • In 21 attempts, Crystal Palace have beaten Manchester City only 5 times away from home
  • In 1926, Manchester City recorded a remarkable 11-4 victory over the Eagles in the 5th round of the FA Cup

Premier League stats
  • Manchester City (53) have scored 41 more goals than Crystal Palace (12) this season
  • Crystal Palace (24) have conceded 5 more goals than Manchester City (19)
  • Manchester City (14) have scored the most goals from set pieces this season, 9 more than Crystal Palace (5)
  • Crystal Palace's (32%) shot accuracy has been relatively poor this season, 8% lower than Manchester City's impressive 40%
  • Manchester City (247) have created 100 more chances than Crystal Palace (147)

Manchester City 2 - 1 Liverpool

MANCHESTER CITY 2 - 1 LIVERPOOL
Kompany 31', Negredo 45'                                   Coutinho 24'

Negredo Navidad for Manuel's minions!

Álvaro Negredo wrapped up a beaming Boxing day present for Manuel Pellegrini on Thursday as Manchester City scrapped and sparred with Liverpool for a potentially pivotal Premier League win.

Undoubtedly City's most austere opponent of the season so far, Liverpool teased and tantalised an inflexible blue back line. However, Manchester City's ninth home win of the 2013/2014 campaign catapulted Kompany and co. into a luxurious second position just one point behind Arsenal.

The league's top scorers martialled the early play with Aleksandar Kolarov whipping a wicked ball into the path of Jesús Navas whose header was denied by the woodwork after just four minutes. However, the league leaders, buoyed by the brilliance of Luis Suárez, responded in rampant fashion when the striker saw his own nod fizz just wide on 13 minutes. The Uruguayan has netted an incredible 19 goals in 12 appearances this season, but he was unable to penetrate a pristine City defence on Thursday evening.

Despite the home side's early dominance, the visitors took the lead mid-way through the half courtesy of some magical play from a titillating Liverpool trio. Suárez and Sterling combined colourfully inside City's 18 yard box to present Philippe Coutinho with an open net to pass in his second goal of the season. The openness of the tie had startled City's stars and a rapid response was imperative.

However, with memories of a previous Merseyside comeback against Everton in mind, Manuel's minions marched mechanically up an elevated Ethihad mountain. Just seven minutes later, Vincent Kompany nodded home from a David Silva corner to put his side back in the game. The Belgian's second goal in consecutive games tranquilised a tremendous Liverpool spell of domination and the blues were back in business.

(Vincent Kompany is hounded by his teammates after equalising for his side)

With the play swinging like a pendulum, both sides failed to take significant opportunities. Just minutes after Kompany's leveller, Jesús Navas led a blistering blue barrage and fired a fearsome shot over Simon Mignolet's bar. Liverpool had chances of their own with the same tremendous trio of Suárez, Sterling and Coutinho connecting in compelling fashion. However, Coutinho's tame effort was gratefully collected by Joe Hart.

With nothing certain apart from the prospect of more goals, Álvaro Negredo fired Manchester City into the lead with just a minute of the first half left to play. Jesús Navas fed in his former Sevilla teammate with a delicious ball and the Spaniard duly struck past Mignolet to score his eighth league goal of the Premier League campaign. The accelaration of City's captivating counter-attacking football had an Etihad crowd salivating, but Brendan Rodgers would have expected his stopper to handle Negredo's shot with relative ease.

(Simon Mignolet's howler gifts Álvaro Negredo his 8th league goal of the season)

Despite witnessing their side march into the break ahead, 'The Coliseum of Catastrophe' sensed a weakness in their gluttonous gladiators. The league's top goalscorer was yet to tuck into his Boxing Day meal and Liverpool's first half performance warranted more than just one goal. With their place at the top of the Premier League tree to preserve, the Merseyside outfit adopted a more malicious approach in the second period.

The best efforts of Luis Suárez to snatch his side a deserved equaliser were swatted away by City's 2011/2012 title winning partnership of Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott and even a customary dive from the South American couldn't swing things in their favour. Squandered opportunities from Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson began to characterise an inauspicious half for the reds and City recorded their hardest fought victory of the season.

Manuel Pellegrini may have preached loneliness before his sides Boxing Day spar with Liverpool, but the Chilean will be hoping for isolating at the top of the table in the new year. City's 100% home record continues to punish the Premier League's elite, and the blues will keep boxing their way towards a very reachable second league title.

Merry Christmas!

Player Ratings
HartJoe Hart - Terrific performance from the England stopper who made a number of crucial saves to prevent Rodger's men from punishing City in their own back yard.

ZabaletaPablo Zabaleta 8 - His return settled some Suarez instilled nerves and he battled through a recent hamstring injury to help his side to a wonderful win. Brilliant attacking down the right as usual.

KompanyVincent Kompany 8.5 - Defended with his life and battled brutally with Martin Skrtel to net City's important equaliser.

LescottJoleon Lescott 7 - Struggled with the sublime skill of Luis Suárez but made a couple of crucial tackles.

KolarovAleksandar Kolarov 7 - Much more lively in the first half where his excellent delivery was exhibited once again, however, had to defend in the second and did it comfortably.

SilvaDavid Silva - Helped City win the midfield battle with the elegance and grace we see from the Spaniard every single week.

FernandinhoFernandinho 8 - Sealed the defence and sprang the attacks in a typically Fernandinho-like performance. What a signing.

Toure YYaya Touré 8 - His presence alone strikes fear into the opposition and he was on hand to create a number of chances for the blues.

NasriSamir Nasri 7.5 - Made up a sublime attacking quintet but was sacrified early for the tirelessness of James Milner.

NavasJesús Navas 8.5 - Sprang most of City's counter attacking play with his lightning fast speed. Almost scored early on with a header and assisted Negredo's winner.

NegredoÁlvaro Negredo - Brilliant performance as the lone striker and his goal sealed a significant win for his side.

Substitutes
James Milner 7 - Added a solidity to City's play.

Edin Džeko 7 - Similarly to Negredo, troubled Liverpool's back line with his strength.

City to spar with Suárez and co. for Boxing Day top spot

Manchester City will host a luxuriant Liverpool side on Boxing Day in a stadium that has been fittingly dubbed the 'Coliseum of Catastrophe'. On home turf, Manuel Pellegrini's savage sleigh has been delivering gifts all year for a salivating City crowd, however, visitors of the Etihad have only left with lumps of coal.

The fearsome form of Luis Suárez has fired Brendan Rodger's men to the top of the tree for the first time since 2008. However, the Uruguayan will be aiming to convert his 19 goals into glory as Fernando Torres failed to do five years ago when Manchester United overhauled their rivals and won the Premier League title. The charismatic conduct of the ubiquitous Uruguayan combined with the recent signing of a new four-and-a-half-year contract has certainly made for a magical Christmas on Merseyside.

(Suárez has been in scintillating form this season, scoring 19 goals in just 12 appearances)

Despite his side's lustrous lead at the top of the table, Liverpool's Northern Irish legislature still believes 'the title is Manchester City's to lose'. In an interview with BBC Sport, Rodgers insisted his Boxing Day adversaries 'have the strongest squad' and couldn't help but make a predictably tedious reference to the blues' wealth, stating 'the resources they have are incredible'. The mind games may have materialised early on, but Manuel's minions have no reason to crumble ahead of the huge home fixture.

However, unfortunately for the Chilean chancellor, Manchester City's very own oracle will be prevented from outshining arguably the league's best player on Thursday. Sergio Agüero's rampant goalscoring form was cruelly cancelled by a calf injury suffering in City's extraordinary 6-3 over Arsenal on the 14th December. Questions were raised as to whether the blues could continue their perpetual peppering of the nets of their opponents, but seven goals in two games since the Argentine's injury has cooled concerns.

One South American who could make a swift return to action is full-back Pablo Zabaleta. City's 'Mr.Bump' limped off with a hamstring injury during the blues' 3-1 over Leicester City in the quarter-final of the Capital One Cup last week but has returned to training ahead of the colossal clash. Gaël Clichy's glitchy performance against Fulham in an unfamiliar role will have Manchester City fans purring over Goal.com's latest news, but the in-form James Milner offers another exciting option should Zabaleta remain on the sidelines.

(Pablo Zabaleta could make an unforeseen return to action on Thursday according to Goal.com)

Manchester City's prowess in front of goal has been perpetually praised this season, but 17 goals in their last four games make Liverpool a formidable foe. In their 2011/2012 title winning season, Roberto Mancini's men scored an outstanding 53 goals in 18 games before the new year. With 51 goals currently recorded in 17 games, a convicing win against the league leaders on Thursday could catapult Pellegrini's performers to yet another tantalising title win.

2-1

Line-Ups
The prospect of a Pablo return will certainly relieve City fears ahead of Luis Suárez's visit to the Etihad. The Argentine is reportedly training with the City squad again after suffering a hamstring injury in Manchester City's 3-1 over Leicester City, however, Manuel Pellegrini may not want to rush such a crucial player back into action.

When he's not injured, he's ill, but Stevan Jovetić has not been ruled out of the Boxing Day clash. The Montenegrin is yet to make an impact on the first team and has endured a tough start to life in Manchester with injuries plaguing his £22m move.

(Stevan Jovetić could make a return to the bench on Thursday)

Injuries to Steven Gerrard, who loves playing against Manchester City, and Daniel Sturridge will make Brendan Rodger's task a little more intimidating come Thursday, however, the Merseyside outfit have coped courageously in the absence of two of their key players.

Possible line-ups

Manchester City: Hart, Milner, Kompany, Demichelis, Kolarov, Navas, Silva, Yaya Touré, Fernandinho, Nasri, Negredo

Liverpool: Mignolet, Johnson, Škrtel, Sakho, Flanagan, Lucas, Allen, Henderson, Sterling, Suárez, Coutinho

Key Players

Yaya Touré
The big game player has one of his biggest to perform in on Thursday and the free-kick specialist will have to be at his best to drive City to a crucial win. With Steven Gerrard watching on from the sidelines, the Ivorian beast has the perfect opportunity to control the midfield with his power and that will ultimately decide who wins the match.

Luis Suárez
With the whole world talking about the Uruguayan, there's no man City should fear more than Luis Suárez. With 19 goals in 12 games, the South American is on course to claim his first ever Premier League Golden Boot and he'll be hopeful of punishing a shaky Manchester City defence on Thursday.
