Monday's MCFC Transfer News

According to the Mirror, Manchester City are preparing a £15m for Barcelona full-back Dani Alves. The Brazilian helped his side dismantle City in a 4-2 aggregate win over the blues in the last 16 of the Champions League this year, but could be sold to help finance the £500m cost of remodelling Barcelona's 98,000 capacity stadium. City, who are resigned to losing club hero Micah Richards this summer, have set their sights on providing cover for Pablo Zabaleta with Arsenal's Bacary Sagna also on their wishlist. The 30-year-old currently has a £30m buy-out-clause in his contract, but could join the blues in a cut-price deal.

Football Direct News understand that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Javi García at the end of the season. The Spaniard has enjoyed more first team football under Manuel Pellegrini, however, after making just 21 appearances so far this term, most of his time has still be spent warming the substitute's bench.

(Javi García is believed to be a popular figure in Manchester City's dressing room)

Tim Sherwood's side have struggled against the league's elite this year and fell to yet another thrashing at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, and a holding midfielder could be the key to plugging the leaks in the side. Manuel Pellegrini is believed to be reluctant to sell the 27-year-old who played a significant roll in helping Spanish stars Álvaro Negredo and Jesús Navas settle into the team, but the London club are expected to test the Chilean's resolve with a £10m bid.

In Other News
In other news, the Manchester Evening News report that Martin Demichelis is beginning to feel at home in Manchester after receiving messages of support from fans this week. The Argentine was heavily criticised for his dodgy defending earlier in the season after giving away crucial penalties in both the FA Cup and Champions league, but a run of five games without conceding a goal has highlighted the importance of the 33-year-old's experience alongside Vincent Kompany. His recent spell of form has been met with plenty of praise from admiring City fans, and the defender has welcomed those messages with a smile.

(Martin Demichelis appears to be settling into life in Manchester)

“I welcome those messages,” said Demichelis. “My confidence is very high and I feel I am in really good form and am happy to help the team.

“It’s true that I conceded penalties in two different competitions, and it’s true they were punctual mistakes, but I am not in bad shape and am full of confidence.

“I could have been worried, for example, that Olivier Giroud might win all the high balls, but he didn’t, and I could have been late into the challenges, but I wasn’t.

“I felt I played well at Arsenal and my form is high – and the positive messages are good.”

Manuel Pellegrini has once again dismissed José Mourinho's monotonous mind games and claims the Portuguese's comments are fooling nobody. The Chilean stated that he expects Mourinho's side to continue to challenge for the title, despite watching his rivals slip up to Crystal Palace this weekend.

(Manuel Pellegrini has shrugged off a fresh batch of mind games from José Mourinho)

“Mind games?” the Manchester City boss is quoted as saying in the Guardian. “I don’t think important managers can give any importance to those mind games. I don’t know if you think managers who seem to play mind games are more intelligent? I don’t think so.”

“I don’t know the way he thinks, my way of thinking is that the four teams have the same options to win the title. We have to win those six points [from the games in hand]. We don’t have six points more, we have two games postponed.”

And finally, Match of the Day pundit Mark Lawrenson believes the title is still Manchester City's to lose despite watching his beloved Liverpool side thrash Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 on Sunday. The ex-player praised his old side in his column for the Mirror, but believes Pellegrini's side will pip them to the title.

"For some time now I’ve been saying that although Liverpool can win the Premier League they ultimately won’t – and I still believe that," Lawrenson wrote.

"The Reds have been magnificent all season, shooting their way out of trouble and that sends confidence right the way through the team.

"Defenders will be thinking: ‘Even if I make a mistake, either Suarez or Sturridge or Coutinho can score a goal.’ It takes the pressure off.

(Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez have scored 49 goals between them this season)

"But for Liverpool to win the league they will have to turn eight wins in a row into 14.

"That is a massive ask.

"And I think Manchester City’s deeper squad will just give them the edge."

Arsenal 1 - 1 Manchester City

ARSENAL 1 - 1 MANCHESTER CITY
Flamini 53'                           Silva 18'

Flamini forbids first place from City.

"It's in their hands" - the extraordinarily original words of every football pundit in the United Kingdom, but one can't argue. Tony Pulis's relegation warriors issued a dagger to the heart of Chelsea's command over the Premier League table just two-and-a-half hours before the weekend's main act, but a Manchester City side bruised by the precipitates of fatigue could only collect a point from the Emirates Stadium. With two games in hand on Chelsea and an opportunity to achieve a four-point lead at the top of the table, the title may well be in our hands, but those hands are beginning to drip with perspiration.

The unrelenting stones of criticism have pelted Arsène Wenger's men in recent weeks as humiliating losses to Liverpool and Chelsea provided immovable resitance against their push for the title. The Gunner's possess a regrettable ability to melt under the scorching heat of their title rivals on their travels, and although they have conceded 17 goals at the homes of their fellow top four members this term, the Londoners have lost just once in the refuge of the Emirates Stadium. That impressive home record continued this weekend thanks to the vigor and vitality of veterans Tomáš Rosický and Mathieu Flamini.

(The 33-year-old Czech midfielder has been in tremendous form for Arsenal this season)

Manuel Pellegrini's men have restored the assurance that flavoured their play in the early stages of the season and a 3-0 win over their Manchester rivals on Tuesday night commenced their final march towards the Premier League trophy. A majestic midfield three of Fernandinho, Yaya Touré and David Silva composed the comfortable victory at Old Trafford and an audience of 75,000 were hypnotised by the casual one touch passing that carved another piece of meat out of the rotting corpse of Moyes's men.

The same elegance infused City's play in the early stages as they looked to assert their authority over a faltering Arsenal side, and David Silva's tap in after just 18 minutes booked his side a trip to some sight-seeing at the summit. Edin Džeko was denied his third goal in two games as his shot smashed against the post, but the ubiquitary Spaniard was perfectly placed to tap in the opener.

The blues continued to assert their dominance until Mike Dean pursed his lips against his whistle, but a flurry of chances to end Arsenal's fading title hopes failed to test Wojciech Szczęsny. Both sides had extracted valuable lessons from their high-scoring meeting back in December and the tie adopted a more conservative ambience as the half-time break approached.

For all the pace the home side lacked, tenacity and perseverance filled its place effectively. Arsenal's teamsheet, including a midfield four of Tomáš Rosický, Mathieu Flamini, Santi Cazorla and Mikel Arteta, made pleasant reading for Manchester City fans ahead of the fixture, but the quartet rallied with obstinance in the second half to combat the tiring legs of Pellegrini's side. The Gunners were commanding the play, and it took only eight minutes for the hosts to claim a deserved equaliser when Mathieu Flamini finished past Joe Hart from a teasing Lukas Podolski cross.

(Mathieu Flamini rolls in a deserved equaliser for Arsenal - via The Times)

As the game faded into the grasp of fatigue, Wenger's men enjoyed a lengthy spell of possession to keep the blues on their toes until the final whistle blew. Four points from two games against Manchester United and Arsenal would have been welcomed at the start of the week, and although the Gunner's absence of pace in the centre of midfield could have been exposed more successfully by the blues, a draw has to be considered a satisfactory result. Upcoming ties against Southampton and Liverpool could ultimately predict City's title chances, and no can deny that the blues have the fate of the 2013/2014 campaign in their hands.

Player Ratings
Hart Joe Hart 7 - Another assured performance from the keeper who has looked comfortable since replacing Costel Pantillimon between the sticks. Made a number of crucial saves, most notably from Podolski's fierce effort.

Zabaleta Pablo Zabaleta 7 - City's Argentinian warrior churned out yet another tireless performance that helped the blues fight against an Arsenal onslaught late in the game.

Kompany Vincent Kompany 7 - Picked up his customary yellow card early on and did well to maintain his discipline in a fearsome tie.

Demichelis Martin Demichelis 7 - Brilliant until his unfortunate error for Flamini's goal, but the veteran is definitely improving.

Clichy Gaël Clichy - A solid display from the Frenchman who did well to nullify the threat of his former teammates.

Fernandinho Fernandinho 7 - Looked threatening when going forward and unleashed a couple of screamers on Sczcesny's goal.

Toure Y Yaya Touré 6 - The Arsenal boss revealed his regret at not signing the Ivorian back in 2003, but this was one of Yaya's off days. Wasn't able to bomb forward as Pellegrini kept him in the holding roll for too long.

Navas Jesus Navas 6 - You can't fault the Spaniard for trying, but his delivery was below par and he never really threatened Gibbs on the right.

Silva David Silva 7.5 - Commanded City's dominance in the first half with his usual magic, but he was tamed in the second. Scored City's goal.

Nasri Samir Nasri 6 - Played to the tune of monotonous booing from his former fans, and it affected his game. Quiet.

Dzeko Edin Džeko 6 - His fierce strike against the post set up City's opener, but the Bosnian was unable to affect the game in the latter stages.

Substitutes
James Milner 6 - Possibly should have started over Navas.

Javi Garcia 6 - Allowed Touré to push forward, but it was too late.

Álvaro Negredo - no time to mark.

Sunday's MCFC Transfer News

It's been a great week for the blues, but an emotional morning for fans. They say 'if you love them, let them go', and this summer could see one of our most treasured representatives end his 13-year tenure at the club.

According to Goal.com, Newcastle United lead the race for £7m rated full-back Micah Richards. The defender, who has just one year remaining on his contract, has made 18 appearances in the last 18 months due to a constant fight against injury and Manuel Pellegrini appears to be losing patience with the 'one club man'. His injuries have allowed Pablo Zabaleta to secure his place in the squad as City's first choice right-back and reports suggest the blues will offer Bacary Sagna a three-year contract to cover for the Argentine. Regardless, Richards is certain to wave goodbye to the fans that nurtured him in his days as a promising teen in search for first team football.

An Englishman Manchester City won't allow to leave the club however is James Milner. The midfielder's tenacity has provided Manuel Pellegrini with a vital utility option this season and the Chilean is reportedly keen to offer the player a new deal before he jets off to Brazil for the World Cup. According to the Daily Star, City are likely to offer Milner a three-year-deal which will keep him at the club until 2017 and match his £80,000 a-week wages.

(James Milner has established himself as a vital member of Manuel Pellegrini's squad this season)

In Other News
After watching Chelsea surrender their command over the title race yesterday afternoon, Manuel Pellegrini has finally admitted that the title is in his side's hands. A John Terry own-goal sealed Chelsea's demise at Selhurst Park on Saturday and the blues now have two games in hand on Mourinho's team which could see them take a four-point lead over the Londoners. Speaking to Talk Sport, the Chilean called on his side to win all of their remaining games, but remained wary of the threat Liverpool carry.

(Manuel Pellegrini's side will pick up the title if they win all of their remaining games)

“If Liverpool beat us it’s another thing. They have to beat us first but also if we win all our games we are the champions,” Pellegrini said.

“The four teams, including Arsenal, have the chance to win the title. I think it’s not easy for the four teams to win all the games from now until the end of the season.

“I think the four teams will drop points because the last part of the Premier League is always more difficult because there are teams battling relegation, too.

“You must ask Chelsea today what happened [in their defeat against Crystal Palace]. We have eight games more and a lot of points to fight for.”

Friday's MCFC Transfer News

In the build up to his side's mouthwatering clash with Manchester City on Saturday evening, Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger has revealed yet another one of his transfer failings - Yaya Touré. The Frenchman, who has previously admitted to missing out on world class stars such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo, told the Express of the failed move back in 2003 and ranked it "at the top" of his list of signing regrets.

However, the manager was quick to dismiss the deal as a 'miss' and blamed the player for not completing the move.

"Let's not forget Touré had an agreement with Arsenal. We waited for his passport in Belgium but he went to Ukraine [instead].

"He's not a mistake but he preferred to go to Donetsk without a passport."

And it's a good job he did!

Stuart Brennan of the Manchester Evening News certainly believes it was, and the journalist has praised the Ivorian's conduct in the City shirt this season. Players have been voting for the PFA Player of the Year award this week and although Luis Suarez remains the out-and-out favourite for the accolade, Brennan believes Touré should be given more recognition for his influence on Manuel Pellegrini's team.

(The midfielder has already scored 17 Premier League goals this season)

"Suarez is a heavy odds-on favourite to win both baubles, having scored 28 league goals, and being the single biggest reason that Liverpool are fighting it out with City and Chelsea for the league title.

"But Toure is third favourite, behind Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, and that is scandalous.

"Perhaps it is because Toure has other contenders in his own team that his incredible contribution to City’s success story has not stood out as much as it should.

"Toure has been a constant in City’s magnificent form this season, and remains the man who pops up and produces a piece of magic when it is most needed.

"He already has a winner’s medal in his pocket after producing a phenomenal goal in the Capital One Cup final which changed the course of that game.

"And, despite being a holding midfielder to all intents and purposes, he has scored 21 goals this season, an astonishing return.

"Not only that, the variety of goals makes his collection special – long-range smashes and curls, deadly free-kicks, ice-cool penalties, powerful surges with lethal finishes, and poachers’ tap-ins."

The Express have also flavoured this morning's headlines with some juicy news from Italy, news that could see Edin Džeko leave the club this summer. According to Inter Milan director Piero Ausilio, the club are hopeful of bringing in either the Bosnian or Chelsea's Fernando Torres at the end of the season as the Milanese giants attempt to reenter Serie A's elite. However, with both players commanding huge wages from their respective clubs, stumbling blocks are likely to be met should any discussions begin.

(Edin Džeko netted a brace in City's 3-0 win over Manchester United on Tuesday, but the striker could be on his way out of the club this summer)

In Other News
In other news, Arsène Wenger has given an update on Bacary Sagna's future and believes the full-back will remain at Arsenal after the summer. The 31-year-old, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City after announcing his intentions to remain in the Premier League, but his current boss believes he will do that in an Arsenal shirt.

Speaking to London24, the Frenchman said “I am confident he will stay but we will accept his decision no matter what it is.”

(Bacary Sagna has been linked with a move to Manchester City in recent weeks)

And finally, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes the blues will win the title if they beat Arsenal this weekend.

“If Manchester City go to Arsenal and win this weekend I think the Premier League title will be theirs.''

Manchester United 0 - 3 Manchester City

MANCHESTER UNITED 0 - 3 MANCHESTER CITY
                                                                                          Džeko 1', 56', Yaya Touré 90'

Džeko double decides battle of David v's Goliath.

The parable pronounces the gallantry in one overwhelming underdog's fruitful attempt to topple a true giant of the land, but it was Goliath who reigned supreme in Tuesday night's confrontation at Old Trafford. David Moyes's decaying Manchester United side fell to their sixth home league defeat of the season with a lifeless performance which only served to make way for Manuel Pellegrini's minions to march closer towards the title. There's something rotten in the state of Mancunia, and the stench is intensifying on Sir Matt Busby Way.

On a night where 'The Chosen One' banner had to be guarded by stewards, the man himself was given no protection by his clan of clowns who flopped to their second derby day defeat of the season. Wins against Olympiakos and West Ham United had brightened the black skies hanging over the Scot's head in the build up to Tuesday night's clash, but Pellegrini's side issued the fallen champions with a harsh reminder of their real capabilities under Moyes - capabilities that don't extend to top four sides.

(Easy: Joe Hart and Edin Džeko share a chuckle after the comfortable win - via MCFC Facebook)

The Stella's began their pursuit down the throats of City fans as Michael Oliver blew his whistle to commence the 150th Manchester derby, but vodka shots soon joined the party when Edin Džeko fired the blues into the lead after just 43 seconds. David Silva's exquisite touch was blocked excellently by Rafael inside the box, but the Brazilian's clearance could only find compatriot Fernandinho who angled a superb ball into Samir Nasri who smashed against David de Gea's post. Cruelly, the rebound fell into the path of the Bosnian striker who was expertly placed to tap in the opener.

(Edin Džeko gives City the perfect start with goal in the first minute - via MCFC Facebook)

Even acclaimed Manchester United fan Usain Bolt would have been impressed by the velocity of City's approach that petrified the hosts in the opening minutes. The magic of David Silva was spiraling round the 75,000 capacity stadium as he tied and knotted the aging legs of Rio Ferdinand in front of David de Gea's goal, and blurry interchanges between himself, Yaya Touré and Samir Nasri provided the main entertainment of the first half. Moyes's tactics appeared to focus around combating the threat of City's midfield, but not even a holding trio of Marouane Fellaini, Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick could contain the brilliance of Manuel's magicians.

The Old Trafford faithful bellowed their requests for a response, and the reds enjoyed a spell of possession as the first half approached its climax. Chances fell at the feet of both Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata, but despite Sky Sports News's bizarre focus on the two opportunities, the £64.6m duo never really tested Hart's goal.

The blues looked happy to contain after such a sizzling start to the game, and not even a malicious elbow from United's Belgian afroman on Pablo Zabaleta could affect the comfort with which the blues were passing the ball. Replays suggest the foul should have warranted a red card, but referee Michael Oliver could only produce yellow.

(Marouane Fellaini plants a vicious elbow into the face of Pablo Zabaleta - via Daily Star)

Not for the first time this season, Moyes's tactics were helping his side on their way to yet another loss. Tom Cleverley's no show on the right hand side of midfield was replaced by the creativity of Shinji Kagawa at the break, but the Japanese international could do little to guide his team to an equaliser.

And it was the visitors who attacked the second half with a seductive vigor yet again when they doubled their lead on the 56 minute mark. Samir Nasri's out-swinging corner met the right boot of Džeko who cleanly dispatched his second goal of the game into the roof of de Gea's net, and as a blue Poznan danced in the stands, a sea of red began to filter out of the stadium. Not even United's heroic hall of famer Sir Alex Ferguson could escape the wrath of a frenzied home crowd as an embarrassing section of his former supporters directed their frustrations towards him.

(Edin Džeko and Samir Nasri cannot hide their delight as they celebrate City's second of the game - via MCFC Facebook)

As the tie filtered out into a comfortable twenty minutes of passing practice for the blues, David Moyes began to hide the harsh reality of his team's demise behind the wrinkles of his palms. A rare moment of spontaneity from Danny Welbeck almost gifted the reds a goal, but Joe Hart was on hand to flap away the Englishman's effort.

But there was time for one last surge from the blues who glittered the scoreline with a third goal with just seconds left to play. Milner's cross into Yaya Touré was caressed excellently by the Ivorian who skipped round Patrice Evra and fired in a driven effort into the far corner.

(Yaya Touré applies the icing on the cake of a mouthwatering victory)

The blues had never gone into a Derby day clash so clearly as favourites, but the gulf in class on show at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening served to strengthen those pre-match claims. David Moyes may not be the man for Manchester United, but Manuel Pellegrini is indubitably the man for us, and with two games in hand on league leaders Chelsea, our push for the title appears to be acquiring acceleration.

Player Ratings
Hart Joe Hart 7 - Often criticised for his distribution, the England stopper had no trouble providing David Silva and co. with a series of precise goal kicks to kick start City's attacks. Relatively untroubled, but denied Danny Welbeck a certain goal with a great reaction save.

Zabaleta Pablo Zabaleta 8 - The only action inside his own half concerned a malicious Fellaini elbow for which the Belgian should have been sent off, but other than that, the Argentine was able to offer his abilities in City's attack.

Kompany Vincent Kompany 8.5 - Returned from suspension in emphatic style and made sure United's main threat, Wayne Rooney, didn't have a sniff. Excellent in defence, and his unrivaled ability to read the game also halted a number of promising United attacks.

Demichelis Martin Demichelis 8 - His best performance alongside Kompany. Comfortable on the ball and had no trouble with the pace of Danny Welbeck. The veteran is certainly settling into life at the heart of City's defence.

Clichy Gaël Clichy 8 - Will have been relieved not to see Antonio Valencia's name listed on the team sheet, and without any threat coming down the right hand side, Clichy was able to join in with City's attacking play. May not carry the same threat as Kolarov, but keeps the ball brilliantly and never rushes into a decision.

Navas Jesus Navas 7 - His inclusion evidenced Pellegrini's intent to hit United early on, and it definitely worked. The Spaniard terrorised Evra with his pace in the early stages, but he was unable to maintain his spark and made way for Javi Garcia early in the second half.

Fernandinho Fernandinho 8.5 - Ensured United's possession resulted in nothing and completely controlled the centre of the park. Missed a great opportunity at 1-0, but fortunately, his team mates were on hand to cancel out the mistake.

Toure Y Yaya Touré 8.5 - Distribution and dominance in the centre was perfect. Rarely has a bad game against the arch-rivals and added yet another peach to his tally in Manchester derbies.

Nasri Samir Nasri 7.5 - Formed a third of the trio that terrified the hosts in the opening stages. One touch passing was magnificent, but couldn't affect the game as positively as his fellow midfielders. Assisted Džeko's second.

Silva David Silva 9 - Orchestrated City's blistering play in the opening minutes and never let Fellaini get near him. Tip-toed his way in and out of United's midfield with enchanting ease and got the better of his Spanish pal Juan Mata.

Dzeko Edin Džeko 8.5 - Work rate was stunning and the Bosnian led the line fantastically in one of his best performances for the club to date. Two goals will cement his place as City's first choice striker until Sergio Agüero returns.

Substitutes
Javi Garcia 7 - Helped City see out the win and calmly patrolled the midfield alongside Fernandinho.

James Milner 7 - Fifteen minutes of effort and passion from the Englishman. Assisted Touré's goal.

Álvaro Negredo 7 - Physical presence kept United's defenders on their toes.

Tuesday's MCFC Transfer News

Happy Derby Day, blues! If you're anything like me this morning, you'll be lay in bed, quaking with untameable fear ahead of tonight's game. We're favourites, despite anything our gaffer may have to say, and the extra burden intensifies the fear factor just that little bit more. Hopefully come 21.30pm this evening, the nerves will be settled by a crisp glass of Peroni or two as we celebrate yet another Derby Day win. Let's hope!

But the gossip must go on, and there's definitely enough to get your teeth into this morning.
According to the Daily Star, Joe Hart has emerged as a £25m target for Spanish giants Real Madrid. The 26-year-old is reportedly seen as a long term replacement for Iker Casillas who has fallen down the pecking order at the Santiago Bernabeu and has also been linked to the blues in recent months. Hart's future had been in doubt after being dropped by Manuel Pellegrini last November, but the goalkeeper appears to have relocated his best form as the blues begin their push for the Premier League title.

The Star also believe that Bacary Sagna will join Manchester City on a free transfer this summer. The Frenchman has reportedly turned down a £9m offer from Inter Milan in favour of staying in the Premier League and the blues are now favourites to snatch the defender away from any other potential suitors.

(Bacary Sagna would prefer to stay in the Premier League when his contract expires this summer)

In Other News
In other news, Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho has poked a cheeky dig at City's arch-rivals ahead of the game by revealing how surprised he was with United's shambolic showing last September. The blues mutilated David Moyes's men in a 4-1 win last September, but the 28-year-old expects a completely different challenge this time round.

"I was surprised how badly United played that day. It was the first time I'd played them after joining City. They are a club with a lot of history, with very good players and they were the champions but we won easily,'' Fernandinho said in an interview with the Daily Express.

(The Brazilian was surprised with how easily his side beat Manchester United last September)

"That game against us was a long time ago and the situation is different now because we are fighting for the title and they are not. They are just fighting for honour now.

"It has been a bad season for them but I saw their Champions League game against Olympiakos on television and they played very well.

"This will be my first game at Old Trafford and I am looking forward to it. We will go there expecting to win. They are all big games for us now. We know we cannot afford to drop a single point. This derby and the game at Arsenal on Saturday will both be like cup finals. We have to look to win them both.”

And finally, Manuel Pellegrini has insisted his side do not go into tonight's game as favourites, despite sitting 12 points above their hosts. In his pre-match press conference, the Chilean attempted to remove the pressure from the shoulders of his players, but called on them to put in an important performance.

(Manuel Pellegrini insists his side are not favourites ahead of tonight's clash)

"I don't think we are favourites in any game," said the Chilean.

"We are in a good moment but we are playing against a big team in their own stadium, so I don't think we are the favourites.

"Of course we always expect to go and win every game but, I repeat, just because Manchester United have had a difficult season it does not mean we are going to win. We have to go there and play a very good game."

Manchester United v Manchester City

In a bid to cool the rivalry ahead of Tuesday's game, I got together with Manchester United supporter @SportSupport15 to review our respective team's seasons so far...

So, let's get things started, what did you think of the game at the weekend?

Adam: It's been a case of individual class over collective quality for a number of weeks now, and although highlighting negatives after a 5-0 win seems ridiculous, our recent acquaintance with the league's elite has turned me into a picky perfectionist. In truth, Fernando Amorebieta's red card sprinkled the scoreline with glitter, but we started the game with same flatness that has characterised our play for a while now - it was there in the Capital One Cup final, but fortunately, we decided to play for five minutes. The steam train that pierced through the Premier League earlier in the season appears to have slowed down in pace, and although it was to be expected, Manuel Pellegrini must inject the same intensity into the team with the run we have coming up. I thought James Milner had a tremendous game, and I admire his industry, but the same can't be said for our misfiring forward Álvaro Negredo who did little to influence proceedings once again. Fortunately, City will always be able to rely on class, and David Silva, Yaya Touré and Samir Nasri have plenty of it.

Ben: I thought the game overall was very positive from a United point of view. With a makeshift back four and the loss of Van Persie to the squad, I thought United looked in command from the outset and never seemed to be under too much pressure. Rooney’s breath-taking goal will live long in the memory, especially with David Beckham sitting in the crowd and watching another Manchester United star score from around the half-way line. On the counter attack the team looked sharp and incisive, especially when viewing the link-up play between Mata and Rooney up top. Fellaini looked solid in midfield, really proving to previous doubters his ability to break up West Ham’s play and provide a real battering ram when going forward and in the air from set-pieces. Carrick did well in his make-shift central defensive position and Jones looked solid beside him, proving that his real talents lie in commanding the center of the back four. Overall the performance was solid and very positive against a side who have been difficult to break down at home recently. The only negative as Moyes pointed out in his post-match interview was that United didn’t score enough goals, especially with there being far more chances created in the match in comparison to previous performances.

Who has been your player of the season so far?

Adam: It's been a season of two halves for City, and injury has played its part in a Jekyll and Hyde sort of campaign for the blues. That's not to say we've been bad, but a number of players have seen their form decline as the season has progressed. If the question was posed at the start of the season, I couldn't have named anyone other than Sergio Agüero. The Argentine had obviously been consulting his pal Lionel Messi over the summer and his conduct in front of goal was becoming a source of genuine ecstasy for City supporters. Unfortunately, injury has seen him relinquish his battle with Luis Suarez for the Golden Boot and the Uruguayan should pick up the award now. Álvaro Negredo was similarly brilliant, but the fracture to the 'Beauty and the Beast' partnership has taken its toll on the Spaniard who hasn't scored in 12 games. As always, David Silva, Yaya
Touré and Vincent Kompany have been immaculate, and I can't ignore the resurgence of Samir Nasri, but I'd have to go with the new man Fernandinho. He's come into a side with such a daunting price tag on his shoulders, but his composure in the midfield has allowed our attacking forces to shine. Brilliant signing.

Ben: Two players really stand out for me this season and it would be hard to pick between the two of them. David De Gea has been sublime in goal, having only one minor blip in the Capital One Cup semi-final against Sunderland. Pulling off some magnificent saves in the Wednesday game against Olympiakos all but put United through to the next round, but if it wasn’t for similar performances throughout the whole season United could have looked at a campaign with far more in the goals conceded and points lost column. The other player is the man who scored the incredible goal on Saturday, Wayne Rooney. Having been given the new contract making him the highest paid player in Premier League history, Rooney has on many occasions this season carried the team on his shoulders. Scoring incredible goals and showing a work rate many fans only dream to see from their whole team, the England star has been inspirational when going forward. Since Mata’s arrival Rooney has found his performances decline a little as Moyes tries to accommodate all of his stars into the team, but this week especially, Rooney has shown his true ability and proved a real threat and invaluable talent in the United squad. Without these two in the side this season, Moyes might have seen his team drop down to a position a lot lower than 7th.

What do you think of your current league position and does it reflect how you’ve played this season?

Adam: Third place in the Premier League with three games in hand on the league leaders can't raise too many complaints, but then you cast an eye over our fixture list for April and realise that the task isn't as straightforward as it may first seem. Pellegrini has flavoured the squad with a ferocious attacking intent I've only ever seen from the Arsenal 'Invincibles' ten years ago, but defensively, we've suffered. Fortunately, our strength in attack has outweighed our weaknesses at the back, but a central defender has to top the Chilean's wishlist as we approach the end of the season. I'm content with Pellegrini - it's his first season in England and he'll soon realise the importance of a sturdy back line. Once we balance the team correctly, we'll be a relatively untameable force. If we're sitting at the top of league after our next four games against Manchester United, Arsenal, Southampton and Liverpool, I'll be ecstatic, but it's a real ask from a squad that appears to be tiring.

Ben: Many fans thought that there would be a minor decline in our position in the table this season, but after watching every game I have to admit I am not surprised by our position and think it is fairly justified. Moyes has struggled tactically in games where United should have closed out the match, losing key points against United, Fulham and Cardiff late in the game. Records have also been broken with regularity, losing at home to West Brom, Liverpool, Swansea, Newcastle and Everton, results that many fans haven’t had the horror of experiencing before. Everyone knew this would be a season of serious transition, especially with the loss of Ferguson and his staff, but I thought there would be a small decline and maybe the team would be fighting for 4th, but never sitting in our current position of 7th place. I have no doubt in my mind that next season will be a different matter altogether, especially with big funds being made available and Moyes being given the time to incorporate his own philosophies into a new look side. I think the one thing that has shocked me though and does raise no surprise about where we are in the table is that quality of the squad. Out wide we have struggled this season and defensively we have had many problems. Players leaving at the end of the season and a host of injuries have caused certain situations like Carrick playing in the back four on Saturday, inconsistencies which have majorly harmed the club. Overall I do think our position is justified, especially with the teams above us buying top quality players and playing far more flowing and aggressive football, but I don’t think it will be the case next season and we will be putting our name into the hat with far more threat about us once the summer is over.

Has the new manager had a desired effect on the team?

Adam: Pellegrini's influence on the team doesn't just exhibit itself on the field, the whole club has benefited from his charm and experience. He bears no grudges, he respects all professionals, and he reveals nothing - it's brilliant. As I said, in an attacking sense we've been irresistable and the introduction of Negredo and Navas has given the side options in both a physical and athletic sense. We're the top scorers in the whole of Europe this season, even after losing
Agüero to injury and Negredo to form, so it's difficult to deny that we've upgraded on Roberto Mancini. However, although I wouldn't say Pellegrini has neglected the defence, I feel he has rested his priorities at the other end of the field and we've suffered as a result. Martin Demichelis hasn't been the criminal the media make him out to be, but he's not the answer, and a world class defender needs to brought in to partner Kompany. I like Pellegrini, and although some of his substitutions baffle me at times, I feel he'll only get better as he acclimatizes to the league.

Ben: In all honesty, I don’t believe Moyes has had a strong enough effect on the side to suggest he is the man for the future yet. Showing naïve tactics against Liverpool recently, United have seemed to have lost a cutting edge when going forward, but also a lack of fluency and counter-attacking sharpness this season. There have been moments when Moyes has made very defensive subs to try and close out games which have back-fired, but there have been an abundance of rumours flying around that there have been small bust-ups between players and the manager which will not instill confidence in any supporter’s thoughts about Moyes having a positive influence on the club yet. I have stuck by the manager all season, but there have been points recently where my strength in support of him have started to wane. I was hugely disappointed by his late subs and one-dimensional tactics against Liverpool and felt that in the big games this season we have struggled to match the authority we displayed against the top clubs that was visible in previous seasons. Moyes should be given time, especially with the likes of Vidic, Ferdinand and Evra leaving the side and money in the bank to build his own squad, but we cannot have a season like this again with the funds available and stars such as RvP, Rooney, Mata, De Gea and Januzaj in the squad. All eyes will be on the summer transfer window and the start of next season. After his comments after the match yesterday stating that United will be challenging for silverware once again next season, I am hoping that he sticks to his words and starts showing more flair, excitement on the pitch and also starts meeting the demands and expectations of the clubs and supporters alike.

Do you believe there are any areas in the team or the overall club that need improving?
Adam: The blues are in desperate need of a centre back and a central midfielder. As many football fans would agree, Yaya Touré may be the hardest midfielder to replace in world football, and the unique qualities he possesses are yet to be seen in any other box-to-box midfielder in European football. Fortunately, the Ivorian has a tasteful record with injury, but with only Javi Garcia and Jack Rodwell to replace him should he suffer from any unexpected niggle, we lack the required strength to maintain our performance level without him. William Carvalho, Blaise Matuidi and Fernando have all been linked with the club in recent weeks, and if reports are to be believed, the two Manchester clubs will lock horns for the 21-year-old Sporting Lisbon midfielder in the summer. I'd also like to see Eliaquim Mangala fill the gap in the centre of defence. He's left footed, big, strong and knows how to play the ball, and right now I couldn't think of a better, more capable companion for Vincent Kompany.

Ben: With regards to the squad and the imminent departures I think there are some quite big positions that need strengthening next season. Losing Evra, Vidic and Ferdninand at the back, and Buttner not being the best replacement for the Frenchman, United will need to strengthen their back four considerably. I believe Jones’ best position is at CB and should be given a chance to solidify that place next season, but I also think that if United were to get someone with the experience and quality of Garay alongside him then United would have a much more consistent and fortress-like defence. I also feel the potential acquisition of Shaw would be an incredible coup if it were to happen. Having a youngster with such talent would be a massive boost to the squad and could be a player that could cement his place in United’s history for years to come. Fellaini has started to show strong signs this season of being able to strengthen a struggling midfield, but the centre of midfield need further improvement. Links with Kroos and Carvalho have been very strong in recent weeks and a midfield like that next season would certainly worry the top teams, if these rumours actually did come to fruition. The wingers haven’t been good enough this season and this position is an area that needs to be strengthened, but it’s too early to see if Moyes will change the formation to accommodate Mata, Rooney and Januzaj in a tighter line behind the main striker. Whilst we are strong in attack, the potential departure of Hernandez may mean that we need acquire another top striker, especially if Robin Van Persie is as injured as he has been this season.

Recall your favourite Derby Day result

Adam: The Mario Balotelli orchestrated 6-1 has to be mentioned, purely for the humiliation we cast on Ferguson. The result came at a time where the Scot was beginning to ripen with smugness in his old age, and the performance really let him know that the 'noisy neighbours' were only going to get louder. More importantly, it wasn't a freak result, and our superiority on the field was rewarded with a mouthwatering scoreline. Another that pops out at me is the 1-0 semi-final win in the FA Cup three years ago, mainly because I was there. Derby day triumphs are becoming all the more familiar with City fans nowadays, but that only increases the fear factor that little bit more. The blues have never gone into a Derby day clash so clearly as favourites, and the pressure rests on our shoulders going into Tuesday night's clash. Another thrashing at the swamp would do me.

Ben: Two stick in my mind for different reasons. The first was the 2-1 win when Wayne Rooney scored the overhead kick in 2011. In was deemed a real motivational push for United in attempting to stay top of the table and after losing to Wolves the previous week it was the perfect way to win a tight-affair against your fierce rivals. The game was very balanced and full of dogged tackles and entertaining football. United struggled to deal with Silva and Toure in midfield, showing signs of letting the two midfielders tear them apart, but Rooney’s finish will live long in the memory as one of the best goals I have seen. The fittingness of it being in a derby game and open the gap to seven points over City made the result taste even sweeter. The other game was the 4-3 win in the 96th “Fergie-time” minute in 2009. It was, I believe, one of the most entertaining and open derby games for a long time. The match ebbed and flowed on a knife edge and was a real display of two teams providing the fireworks expected from two of the tops clubs in the Premier League. After Bellamy scored a very nice finish in the 90th minute I honestly felt the game was going to end in draw, deemed a far better result by City fans than United’s. After Owen came on later in the game the whole crowd erupted in scenes of complete elation as he coolly netted to end a truly sensational game. I only hope that the game on Tuesday is anything like one of these two!

Who has been your opponent’s best player of the season and who poses the most danger to you on Tuesday?

Adam: There's a guy City fans get into a pickle about before every clash with the arch-rivals, and that's Wayne Rooney. He's scored 11 goals in 24 appearances against us, and the impressive record evidences his influence on the Manchester United team. In my opinion, he's David Moyes's most sharpened weapon and although Robin van Persie scores the goals, Wayne Rooney creates them. Without the Dutchman on the field tomorrow night, I expect Rooney to conduct United's tempo and pose the biggest threat to our back line. Manuel Pellegrini must make a conscious effort to nullify the threat of the forward, and Vincent Kompany could be the man to do just that. However, we must also be wary of the threat Mata carries. It's not happened for him in the red shirt as of yet, but no one can deny the Spaniard's quality.

Ben: I think for this big occasion one of the payers I am most worried about is Kompany. I believe that right now there is no defender better than him in world football and is the difference between us getting anything upfront from the game or nullifying any attack we start. His dominance over Messi in the first leg of the Champions League should open everyone’s eyes to how good he is and if he is on his game I think it will be hard for the likes of Welbeck, Mata and Rooney to get any real forward momentum in front of goal. Another player I will be worried about is Silva. He has been in sensational form this season and I believe that he has been probably the best central midfielder in the league and around Europe this season. His vision and precise passing are a real threat when going forward and he seems to be able to create key opportunities in front of goal at ease for one of the strongest strike forces in the league. Having a knack of scoring big goals too, Silva could be key in unlocking the United defence that may be bit-part if we can’t get our leading men in defence fit for the game. The last player is Yaya Toure. A midfielder that has tormented us in previous fixtures I always believe that he could embarrass us at a moment’s notice on Tuesday. He always turns up for the big occasions and even though this fixture may not hold as much importance as previous occasions, any chance to gain bragging rights over United this season makes me believe he will have a big part to play on match day. Out of the three of them I would worry most about Kompany. City will always be able to create opportunities with the array of attacking talent they have, but if Kompany is on the same sort of form seen on so many occasions this season it will be hard for United to break the wall down and be a real attacking threat on Hart’s goal.

Predicted line-up and result

Adam: Pellegrini seems content with the 4-5-1 formation we usually adopt away from home, and I don't see him changing his tactics before such an important game.
Sergio Agüero and Matija Nastasić are City's only absentees, and Edin Džeko has recovered from illness to become available for the squad. It's a tough choice between the Bosnian and Negredo up top, but Džeko's recent performances have impressed be more than the Beast's.

Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Demichelis, Kolarov, Fernandinho, Yaya, Silva, Nasri, Milner, Džeko.

A resurgent United side will be hopeful of rectifying their shocking home form, and I expect them to give us a real game.

I'll go for a narrow 2-1 win for the blues.

Ben: I am not quite sure who we have fit in defence at the moment, with Smalling most likely out, Evans still injured and Ferdinand picking up a late scare against West Ham, but if players are available for the match then this would be my team: (4-2-3-1)

De Gea, Rafael, Jones, Vidic, Evra, Carrick, Fellaini, Welbeck, Mata, Januzaj, Rooney.

As for the result, with a bit of confidence behind them after a positive week both in the Champions League and Premier League I believe this won’t be as straight forward for City as many think. United will not want the embarrassment of the 4-1 loss at the beginning of the season happening again and being the underdogs in the match might suit David Moye’s men a little bit more. United have to learn from the Liverpool performance and show more attacking intent when going forward and a bit more creativity when taking it to City. They will also have to show a lot more maturity in defence and try to work as a squad to disable any opportunities for Silva and Toure to slide in any through balls or take a shot from distance. The game may prove to be a tight affair and I really hope that we show up on the day and make a real go of it on Tuesday evening.

It will be tough, but being the optimist and believe that United will really take the game to City, therefore I am I will go for:

Manchester United 2 – 1 Manchester City.
